Who We Are

Paaqavi Incorporated, a 501 (C),(3) Non-profit, was formed in 1994. The overall mission is to improve the quality of life on a grass roots, community level. The stated mission is “to provide for a good life by promoting Hopi tradition, religion and culture; to create social, economic and cultural opportunities for individuals, groups and villages as a collective; to preserve the Hopi language; to preserve Hopi agriculture, arts and architecture; and to promote for a positive and healthy community environment of the Hopi villages”.


President –  Lyle J. Balenquah (BA, MA Cultural Anthropology)

Lyle is a member of the Tep’wungwa (Greasewood Clan), from the Village of Paaqavi (Reed Springs Place). For over 20 years he has worked as an archaeologist and backcountry guide amongst the sandstone canyons and desert rivers of the southwest. Through his work he advocates for the protection and preservation of ancestral landscapes, combining his professional training with personal experiences and insights about Hopi culture and history.

Lyle is experienced in site mapping, architectural condition assessments, site conservation, pedestrian survey, and technical report writing. In addition, he also provides a Hopi perspective for various projects, exhibits and public education programs.

Ms. Fredericks is a Hopi tribal member and has experience in developing non-profits; administration, financial and project management of grant funding for villages, governments and non-profits.

Marshall Masayesva – Board of Directors. 

Mr. Masayesva is a Hopi tribal member with a Bachelor of Arts from Fort Lewis College in Adventure Education with 8 years of technical adventure experience and is trained as a Wilderness First Responder (Outdoor Medical and Safety).

As a nonprofit, we are grateful for donations to provide the content of our website. There is no tax or fees collected on monetary donations and we accept checks, Zelle and cash at this time. Usqwali.
